Kaatz named director of Office for Responsible Research
Sarah Kaatz has been named director of Iowa State’s Office for Responsible Research (ORR), effective June 20.
Kaatz will lead ORR’s mission to increase awareness of ethical research practice and ensure Iowa State’s research is conducted in compliance with university, state, federal, and funding agency regulations. She will steer ORR’s services to support faculty, staff, and student researchers, and provide oversight to federally mandated research compliance committees in the areas of human subjects, animal subjects, biohazards, and radioactive materials.
“I am very pleased by Sarah’s appointment,” said Sarah Nusser, vice president for research. “Sarah has the both extensive knowledge and the collaboration skills needed to provide exceptional leadership in research compliance on campus.”
Kaatz has served as interim assistant director of ORR since earlier this year. Previous to that, she was ORR’s post-approval monitor, helping researchers comply with approved research protocols. Sarah has also held management and laboratory positions in the area of aquaculture. She earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from University of Wisconsin – Steven’s Point and a master’s degree in fisheries biology/aquaculture from Iowa State.
