Mallapragada joins Office of the Vice President for Research
Surya Mallapragada, distinguished professor and Carol Vohs Johnson Chair in chemical and biological engineering, will join the Office of the Vice President for Research as a half-time associate vice president for research effective July 1.
Mallapragada will focus on research advancement, including engagement with research foundations, developing interdisciplinary collaborations, and continuing her institutional service in nominating faculty for prestigious awards.
Mallapragada is also a scientist in Ames Lab’s Division of Materials Science and Engineering, and a researcher with the Nanovaccine Institute.
Mallapragada has served as faculty fellow in the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost since 2015, and served as chair of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering from 2009 to 2013. She is also a senior scientist and previously served as program director of materials chemistry and biomolecular materials at Ames Lab from 2004 to 2008.
Her research interests include designing polymeric biomaterials and bioinspired materials for delivery of genetic material, polymers for vaccine delivery, bioinspired nanocomposites, and combating neurodegeneration.
Mallapragada earned her Ph.D. in chemical engineering at Purdue University in 1996, and her bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in 1993. She has received numerous honors, including being named a National Academy of Inventors fellow in 2016 and a WiSE Champion with Iowa State’s Program for Women in Science and Engineering.
