Iowa State Scientists Receive Federal Grant to Advance Research on Blood Stem Cells
A recently awarded federal grant could help Iowa State University scientists take critical steps toward generating a patient’s blood cells in order to treat blood diseases. Raquel Espin Palazon, an assistant professor of genetics, development and cell biology, leads an interdisciplinary research team examining a genetic pathway triggered when cells undergo inflammation due to injury or infection. Engineers Study Biochar to Fertilize Crops, Reduce Greenhouse Gases
Iowa State University’s Robert C. Brown and his collaborators thought there might be new ideas and applications that could make biochar a more valuable and useful product, thus enhancing the economics of biorenewables. A new, three-year, $1 million, competitive grant from the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative of the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture will allow them to build on these ideas. Plummer Elected to National Academies of Practice
Dr. Paul Plummer, the Anderson Chair in Veterinary Medicine and professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine, has been elected to the National Academies of Practice as a Distinguished Veterinary Science Fellow. A faculty member at Iowa State since 2010, Plummer is board certified in large animal medicine from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the European College of Small Ruminant Health Management. Midwest Big Data Hub Digital Ag Seed Funding
The Midwest Big Data Hub is focused on building networks and collaborations to advance progress and strengthen data ecosystems. The Digital and Precision Ag arm of the Midwest Big Data Hub is offering Digital Ag seed funds to catalyze the formation of diverse teams across institutions in three focus areas: carbon capture, cybersecurity, and environmental sustainability. Each team must have two equal partners as co-leads: one person from the arts/humanities/social sciences and one person from the STEM disciplines. Proposals are due April 1, 2022.
